RV Tire Safety
69You want to be sure to check the weight rating chart of the tire brand and model that you have to see if the tires on your RV are safe enough to carry your RV down the road (this weight rating chart can be found on any tire manufacturing website). The most important thing you can do to maintain maximum life from your tires is to keep proper pressure in the tires. You can find the maximum pressure allowed on the side wall and keep in mind that this pressure measure is measured when the tire is cold. A 10 psi increase is allowed if the tire is checked when hot. If you are planning to keep your RV parked long term (in storage or long term in an RV park) you will want to cover the tires to prevent dry out and side wall cracking damage from sunlight.
Is A Tire Pressuring Monitoring System A Good Idea??
We bought a tire pressure monitoring system AFTER we had our tire mishap (see picture below) and it was definitely one of the best purchases we made because we now travel with more confidence and can travel later during the day not worrying if we can't see the tires in the mirrors in the evening to keep an eye on them. With the tire pressure monitoring system, it not only tells you thru a wireless digital display unit mounted on your dashboard that the tire has lost pressure, but also the temperature of the tire. With a double axel on the trailer, often you don't feel a tire blow out until it's just too late and damage to the RV has already happened. This picture is one I took in Texas of our tire blow out and a tire blow out just has no mercy on an RV. Our tire pressure monitoring system came with six wireless sensors that screwed onto the tire valve stem in place of the valve stem cap. We put one of each of the four tires on the trailer and the other two we put on the rear tires of the vehicle towing the RV. We now travel with confidence as the monitoring system will beep when the psi of one of the tires falls below a pre-determined psi amount that we set in the monitoring system. The device is customizable and now we can catch a bad tire leak before the tire explodes.
