How to not run out of hot water while RVing......

"As much as I flush my toilet and since I am an avid, long, hot, shower taker, do RV's or RV parks restrict water usage or would I constantly be running out of hot water (I hate running out of hot water!)?"

WOW, what a question. It's not the question I'm concerned about, it's that you have two completely separate questions in one here so let's pick them apart.

First off, let's take a look at a toilet system in an RV. A toilet in an RV doesn't operate the same as a "house" toilet. When you use the toilet in an RV, all that happens is that the “waste” drops into the toilet and then when you "flush" an RV toilet it opens the bottom of the toilet bowl and the waste drops into a tank. If your sewer hose is connected to your RV to the RV Park sewer system, then this waste is dropped into the hose that leads to the RV Park sewer system. This need some very minimal maintenance because the toilet does dispense water into the toilet when you “flush” and then this water and waste is "fed" completely thru the hose into the RV Park sewer holding tank. The water helps flush out all waste with each flush. So the unlimited water that you pay for in your RV Park fee is used for this water. You are not charged per flush or per measurement of water usage. All the RV Parks that I know of will provide you will unlimited water usage. So we took care of that. Use the bathroom as much as you want! :) Just make sure after you use the bathroom and when you flush you toilet, run that water in your toilet for a couple of seconds to flush the waste out of your RV. Pretty simple to do. But, keep in mind that there is no spiraling pull "flush" in an RV toilet and it won't "run" like your home toilet does after you flush it.

NOW, let's look at your shower....The only way your shower has hot water is from your hot water tank inside your RV unit, not from the RV Park directly. This is operated by electric or gas. Electric by plugging your RV into the RV Park's electric outlet right outside your RV at your RV Park Site. Gas is when you are not using an electric outlet or electric power at all and you have to use your propane tank that is attached to your RV unit to heat up your hot water tank (will hit on the hot water tank in a minute). NOW, let's get to the good stuff. The hot water in your shower will only last as long or as much as the hot water tank will hold and heat up. For example, if you a RV that has a small hot water tank, like 6 gallons that is in the Keystone Outback Travel Trailer, your hot water shower will be very limited and can become cold water in less than 15 minutes. Like our Montana that we have now, we have a 12 gallon hot water heater. I can stand in there for 30 minutes and be very happy with the temperature of the hot water. So as you can see, the RV or RV Park doesn't restrict your hot water intake, it's all up to how big your hot water tank is in your RV. I know RVers who have bought an RV that they were very happy with and replaced the hot water tank for a bigger one. Simply, the bigger your hot water tank, the longer you can stand in the shower! :)
